Over 40 pupils from five different local Portsmouth schools attended ASC Portsmouth on Wednesday, for an inspiring day that included a Q&A from British Sailing Team athletes Saskia Tidey and Matilda Nicholls, as well a speed networking event with various local maritime businesses.
Sail Training Trust students from Milton Cross, Bayhouse, Brune Park, Prospect and Henry Cort Community College visited the centre to learn about a variety of maritime career paths, as well as productive actions they can make to set themselves up for their own next steps.
3-time Olympian Saskia Tidey, and ILCA 6 sailor for the British Sailing Team Matilda Nicholls delivered a Q&A session, allowing the pupils to find out about what it takes to make it in the world of professional sailing, and the commitment and dedication the two have displayed in their careers so far.
The pupils then had the opportunity to take part in a speed networking event with a variety of organisations, many of whom have close links to the maritime sector. Representatives from organisations such as Lockheed Martin, GE Verona, Portsmouth International Port, RYA, Just Be Maritime, Boatfolk and many more held 2-1 chats with the pupils, explaining the different things their businesses do, and the steps they have personally taken to reach this position in their career.
Jake Elsbury, from the Royal Yachting Association, said
“It’s been great, we’ve had loads of kids come through where we’ve been able to offer careers advice and answering their questions.”
